Why do we celebrate Father’s Day?

The modern version of Father's Day is often attributed to Sonora Smart Dodd, an American woman who wanted to recognize the efforts of her own father, William Jackson Smart. He was a Civil War veteran and a single parent who raised six children.

Father's Day serves as an opportunity to express gratitude, respect, and affection towards fathers and father figures.  As our country becomes more diverse, how can we expand our definition of what a "father" looks like to make the day more inclusive?

Expanding Our Definition of Father

Expanding our definition of what a "father" is involves embracing a more inclusive and diverse understanding of fatherhood. 

It is important to recognize diverse family structures. Families come in different forms and can include single fathers, stay-at-home dads, adoptive fathers, stepfathers, co-parents, same-sex fathers, and more. Acknowledge and understand that fatherhood is not limited to biological relationships.

Inclusive celebrations send a powerful message about equality and inclusivity in society (see more on inclusive celebrations below). It emphasizes that all caregivers, regardless of gender or family structure, deserve recognition and support. It helps create a more equitable and inclusive society where fathers are seen as capable and valued contributors to their families and communities.

Highlight Diverse Fatherhood

Highlight diverse fatherhood narratives by sharing stories, experiences, and positive examples of diverse fathers with your children and family to challenge preconceived notions and broaden societal perceptions. This can be done through media representation, literature, and community discussions.

The tv series “Modern Family” is an excellent representation of diverse fatherhood. Jesse Tyler Ferguson portrays Mitchell, who is in a same-sex relationship with his partner, Cameron, portrayed by Eric Stonestreet. They adopt a Vietnamese daughter named Lily, and the couple's journey through parenthood showcases the experiences and joys of being a gay father. The show also touches on the themes of divorce, blended families, and parenting at various ages.

Challenge Gender Stereotypes

Challenge gender stereotypes by moving away from traditional gender roles and stereotypes associated with fatherhood. Encourage fathers to engage in nurturing, caregiving, and household responsibilities, while also recognizing and celebrating their unique strengths and contributions.

Inclusive Celebrations

Inclusive Father's Day celebrations send a powerful message about equality and inclusivity in society. It emphasizes that all caregivers, regardless of gender or family structure, deserve recognition and support. It helps create a more equitable and inclusive society where fathers are seen as capable and valued contributors to their families and communities.

Fathers are some of our biggest allies here in the CCWomen community. This Father’s Day, support them intersectionally and celebrate the way they challenge stereotypes, take an active role in their children’s lives, promote equality, and strengthen family bonds. By recognizing and appreciating the varied roles fathers play, we create a more inclusive and supportive society for everyone.
